Want to actually keep your New Year’s resolutions? – try tapping on them

Have you made any New Year’s resolutions? Sadly, if you are like most of us, you won’t manage to keep your resolution going beyond the end of January. It’s a depressing thought. But why do we find it so hard to keep doing things we believe will bring us greater health, happiness, wealth or general fulfillment?

Part of the answer lies in the fact that you are not doing it already. We are creatures of habit, and it is difficult to change old habits and adopt new ones! The neural pathways in our brain run like the familiar course-ways of old rivers, and while changing the pathways of these “rivers” is absolutely possible, it does require a bit of effort until new neural pathways are formed. Our old habits can get in the way, with the temptation to stick to old pathways feeling very strong. EFT can be a huge help here: the simple tapping process is fantastic at dissolving old patterns as it easily clears away emotional attachment to the old habits. And because we access our deepest selves as we tap, EFT helps to really motivate us to do things that will nourish and strengthen us on every level – rather than hurting ourselves by continuing habits that hurt us or sabotage our efforts.

EFT can tap away the fear that can arise as we contemplate change, freeing us to move forward. Tapping also helps to throw up any subconscious blocks we may have about reaching our desired goal, such as “I’d like to change job/write a novel/start my own business…but I’m scared I’ll be no good at it – what if I fail? It’s safer just to keep it as a daydream”. We can also hold ourselves back ourselves because of our limited perceptions of ourselves, eg “I would like to learn to alleviate my stress by learning to meditate but I’m the kind of person who can’t sit still” or “I’d like to be really fit and healthy but I was always hopeless at PE, I’m just not that type of person”. EFT can dissolve these old self-judgments, allowing us to be open and unafraid of trying something new.
